TEXTURED, EXPERIMENTAL, 3d

Isla has sketched, cut-out, painted and photographed 3D lettering for many years.
Below is a small selection from a much larger portfolio.
Isla's approach to making objects, photography and film is to accentuate texture, composition, and editorial narrative. She does this through the use of stark angular viewpoints and set design, or deliberate over exposure to create more painterly lines. With each method she is aiming to create space for the viewer to become immersed in a possible story. Each project is at different stages until the prototype is created, the photograph shot or the film edited, some work-in-progress shots of this design development are below.

Sonic: Title intro. Stills from film in development.
Sketchbook idea: What would the intro to a film about an Australian Cattle Dog look like?
(Isla has an ACD and wanted to convey their energy and character).
Status: WIP/Design Development. Includes handwriting, type selection, and digitized hand-drawn illustration as well as photography and filming on Vancouver Island that Isla took on a holiday with Sonic.
Origin: Self Initiated

Whisper: Environmental Signage/Exhibition Piece
Sketchbook idea: what word could be used to hold space to consider what graphic design is, and what difference does material make to that.
Status: WIP/Design Development: Handwritten word, scaled up and transferred to foamcore, hand-cut in one piece, painted. This is intended to replicate the original written note on lined paper, and would be installed as part of an exhibition on graphic design and alternative voices within it.
Origin: Self initiated.
