TEXTURED, EXPERIMENTAL, 3d

Isla has sketched, cut-out, painted and photographed 3D lettering for many years.
Below is a small selection from a much larger portfolio.
Isla's approach to making objects, photography and film is to accentuate texture, composition, and editorial narrative. She does this through the use of stark angular viewpoints and set design, or deliberate over exposure to create more painterly lines. With each method she is aiming to create space for the viewer to become immersed in a possible story. Each project is at different stages until the prototype is created, the photograph shot or the film edited, some work-in-progress shots of this design development are below.

Handwriting in After Effects: What does 'sparkly lettering' look like....CC Particle Systems

Through practising this technique I figured out that CC Particle Systems isn't really designed as an action that follows intricate lines, through simplifying the word choice to Story and leaning into the qualities of the action itself (amping up the size of the particles and opening up the shapes to create wider arcs) this seemed to help the flow of the final animation.

Developing Giddy + Losing Myself neon writing: WIP

This After Effects project is still very much WIP as I add more detail to make the handwriting behave more like neon writing and add nuance to the motion...In expressing the qualities of the word giddy (excited, almost out of control) I decided to imagine the word like a broken neon light. This is a continuation of the original el-wire neon writing seen in 2D/3D.

SONIC THE HEDGEDOG: TITLE CREDITS/ZINE

Sonic: Title intro. Stills from film in development.
Sketchbook idea: What would the intro to a film about an Australian Cattle Dog look like?
(Isla has an ACD and wanted to convey their energy and character).
Status: WIP/Design Development. Includes handwriting, type selection, and digitized hand-drawn illustration as well as photography and filming on Vancouver Island that Isla took on a holiday with Sonic. She has created motion graphics and has edited film as part of her Glasgow School of Art degree and is now coming back to this skillset to bring the character of her dog to life in these title credits.
Isla is also considering compiling a printed zine from all the content produced for this.
Origin: Self Initiated

EXPERIMENTAL BOOKS

Isla has created a range of experimental print books from one-off perfect bound editions intended to celebrate color and large scale typography, to replicating the type-setting of the King James Bible on tissue paper.
